Part of the problem rests with the fact that mostly caucasian female teachers, who are in charge of the suspensions awarded are still ‘racially afraid’ of students of color. Secondly, many students of color ‘think’ that it’s cool to get Ds and Fs and act out in school because they know that their parent(s) will be able to ‘nag’ the school out of proper punishment. We’ve got the same thing here in the states. Higher suspension rates of Black students in LA, Chicago, New York, and Indiana. Now we’ve got more Black girls getting suspended because of their ‘Beyonce’ “Bow Down” attitude. Girl on girl fights are more and more common and have been for the last five years, here in the states. The way to ‘nip this problem’ in the bud is for young people to learn how to behave in the classroom. It’s not a social hour. School IS the place to learn something. As one who has worked the classroom scene, even in Alternative (Gulag or punishment schools) the students ‘know’ that they can ‘act out’ and still have to have educational services. When the inmates know the system better than the jailer, either you have to ‘ramp up’ the punishment, or change the jailers.
