Where have all of the Black families gone? The face of the Black family that existed after the formal ending of slavery in 1865 has changed dramatically over the years. Many are thriving and intact, while others are struggling, broken.In A Black Family Portrait, the myth of the failing black family is challenged and replaced with a contemporary look at how the Black families are surviving in less traditional ways. Couples share how they have maintained successful and affirming family units in marriages lasting over 60 years. The show also uncovers the most prevalent issues that are tearing black couples apart and provides solutions to the economic and social challenges that the Black family often faces.Guests include married couples Linzie and Louise Coles; Solomon and Laveta Jones; Dr. Patricia Reid Merritt, Professor of Social Work and Africana Studies at Richard Stockton College; and family and couples counselor Reverend Niki Brown. Precious Gift
Most people find it very easy to be grateful when they receive cash or valuable prizes. Lots of people become very excited after they receive a very nice present during the holidays or for special occasions. Money has been known to make many people happy, products or special services have also brought joy to people.
My most valuable and precious gifts of all, are the four sons GOD has given me, Tommel, Lamar, Jessie, & Joseph.
GOD has directed me to enter into the lives of the Grady boys; these four brothers were facing many challenges, I was a little nervous at first to take on such a task, with the support of their grandmother Dorothy Grady and their mother Oneida Grady, it has been a great experience! Oneida Grady was lost in a world of deception and corruption at the time I decided to become the father for these boys.
Dorothy Grady, my son’s grandmother did not give up on her daughter, she aggressively interacted in Oneida’s life in hope that she would give up her dangerous street life. I partnered up with the kids grandmother and formed a strong alliance to care for my sons no matter what I was face with. Many times I had to battle with Oneida’s drug dealing boyfriends just to keep my boys safe. There had been periods of times when I was unable to spend time with my sons because of the dangerous men Oneida brought into my kids life. During my absences, I would make sure I would speak to my sons over the phone and send them money to help support them.
One thing I can say for sure, Oneida have always believed in me, she knew I loved my sons, even when her controlling boyfriends would not let me see them. At that time I was in my early 20s, being a young gay black man, trying to raise four boys was very difficult. I had to deal with the negative response from people in the community as well as my own family.
This challenge has been the best experience in my entire life, if I had to do it all over again, I would do it with great passion!
I would like to thank all of the support and kind words expressed to me during time of my oldest son’s deaf, the late Tommel Grady Dabney age 26.
I love my sons and the six grandchildren GOD has bless me to have!
