Born and raised in Central New Jersey, Althia McLaughlin received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Professional Writing from The College of New Jersey. Althia currently resides in Charlotte, NC. She was originally drawn to writing because she was excited to consider that she might move people and inspire them through her written voice. After working in the fields of Journalism and Book Publishing, Althia returned to graduate school to “help clients in symbolically writing the stories of their lives through the process of therapy”. She eventually received her Master of Arts Degree from Marymount University in Arlington, VA and became a North Carolina Licensed Professional Counselor.
For the past twelve years, Althia has worked as mental health therapist in non-profit agencies, private agencies, group practice, and private practice in North Carolina and Japan. Althia specializes in the areas of trauma, relationship recovery, couples therapy, and low self-esteem. While she felt that the work she did was very rewarding as a therapist, she recognized a common theme in many of her clients’ stories—that a great deal of their unhappiness was caused by unhealthy romantic relationships or loneliness due to not being able to find romantic partners. She wanted to do something to actively help these distraught, traumatized, and defeated clients—individuals who were very deserving of love and ready to do whatever it took to be happy. And she decided to combine her psychology background with her love of love.
Althia opened her matchmaking agency, A Latte Love Matchmaking, in early 2016. Her agency focuses on using psychology-based principles to understand their clients, guide them in overcoming any obstacles that stand in the way of them finding relationship happiness, and making healthy and appropriate relationship matches for their clients. The first date is always at a cafe, emphasizing the importance of simplicity and comfortable conversation during initial introductions. They have, thus coined the tagline: “Once upon a time in a cozy cafe…”, believing that a lifetime of love can start with a beautiful connection made over a good cup of coffee.
Besides her native language of English, Althia speaks fluent Spanish and conversational Portuguese. One of her great loves is travel. She has lived abroad in a number of countries and has a true passion for exploring cultures, languages, and peoples.
