Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

The conversation topic for the August 23, 2020 edition of Black Canada Talking™ was ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective.

ADVANCE, Canada’s Black Music Business Collective, is leading the change in developing an infrastructure for the betterment, upliftment and retention of Black people in the music business.

Serving as a unified front for Black people working within all sectors of the Canadian music industry, Advance creates conditions for long-term success by addressing racial equality and inclusivity through four areas: Advocacy, Mentorship, Community Outreach and Business Development and Entrepreneurship.

By holding the corporate, private and government sectors accountable, Advance is committed to building a more equitable Canadian music industry that grants Canada’s Black music communities a fair and valued voice in a consistently growing music nation.

The guest for the August 23, 2020 edition of Black Canada Talking™ was David “Click” Cox.

David “Click” Cox started his career as a member of the MMVA winning and JUNO nominated group, The Maximum Definitive. Created reputation for his promotional and marketing efforts working closely with concert promotions company REMG. Soon after, he started his career working with BMG Music Canada and then worked at Universal Music Canada as A&R. During his time with Universal, David founded the Stylus Awards to celebrate the Canadian urban music talents and recognition of DJs. After 8 years with Universal, he created his own entertainment company, CLK Creative Works. Today, CLK is responsible for managing an eclectic roster of highly skilled and experienced artists. Along with management, David teaches music business at Metalworks and The Remix Project.

During the conversation, David talked about:

– Some of his background including getting into the music business, how he got his jobs with BMG Music and Universal Music and some memories
– The weekly roundtable conversations that he is having about the Black Canadian music industry (Breaking Down Racial Barriers) which you can listen to here
– Some of the changes in the music industry during his journey
– Impact of 2020 on the Black Canadian music industry
– Some background on his mother in law the late Salome Bey, one the first Black Canadians to have a television special
