Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.
Our guests on the December 19, 2021 episode of Black Canada Talking™ were some of the members of Black Youth Empowerment group from Victoria, British Columbia.
The Black Youth Empowerment (BYE) group consists of six high school students who in winter 2020 began reviewing program content on bystander intervention from the Project Respect program. The focus of the group is to ensure that the information about bystander intervention is culturally relevant. The primary question they are answering is, “How does the content resonate with the group’s Black identities and experiences?”
During our conversation, the members of the Black Youth Empowerment (BYE) talked about:
– The history of the organization
– The young’s people response when they first heard about the organization
– Being a young Black person in Victoria, British Columbia
– The young people’s response when they found out they were chosen to be part of the group
– The first meeting like and what happens each meeting
– Bystander intervention and their experience doing workshops about it this past summer and upcoming workshops
– Their reaction to the George Floyd incident
– The lack of conversations about race and racism in the school system
– Their dreams for the organization
– The significance of the logo
– What’s next for the organization and what are they excited about
