Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.
During the January 17, 2021 edition of Black Canada Talking™, the guests were: Clovis and Sherron Grant.
Clovis and Sherron Grant are parents of 2 children, ages 26 & 24 years, one of whom has special needs. Sherron is a school principal in the Toronto District School Board and Clovis is the CEO of 360°kids, an organization serving homeless youth in York Region.
They founded the Black Parent Support Group in November 2020. The group was developed to support the unique needs of parents/ caregivers who are Black and raising a child with special needs. The child can be of any age and of any disability. The group’s intent is to provide a safe space for families to network, build connections, problem-solve and to reduce their isolation. The group is free to join and meets monthly, on the 2nd Tuesday of the month. For more information, contact via email or Facebook
Support, isolation, funding, resources, friends….These are the things that many families who care for someone with special needs think and worry about. For many of these families, their circle of support is quite small. This is often the case for racialized communities who have a child with special needs. The Black Parents of Children and Adults with a Disability Support Group (BPSG) was created to provide a safe space for families of African descent to come together to meet and connect, share resources, expertise and needs, inspire and support one another through our unique and often challenging and isolating journey of raising Black children or supporting a sibling, of any age, with a disability. It is a volunteer run group that meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. via Zoom. There will be guest speakers, resource sharing, support and mentorship opportunities for attendees. For more details or to register, please contact them via email. You can also find them on Facebook .
