Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Our guests on the May 29, 2022 episode of Black Canada Talking™ were some of the members of Black Youth Empowerment.

The students were given the leadership award on April 30th , one of our facilitators also received the Mentorship Award – Nichola Watson. Avi picked up the award for Victoria Sexual Assault Clinic. The group has been invited to visit the British Columbia legislature this week.

The Black Youth Empowerment (BYE) group consists of six high school students who in winter 2020 began reviewing program content on bystander intervention from the Project Respect program. The focus of the group is to ensure that the information about bystander intervention is culturally relevant. The primary question they are answering is, “How does the content resonate with the group’s Black identities and experiences?”

During our conversation, the members of Black Youth Empowerment talked about:

– Background on BYE and Dr. Lisa, Amara, Avi and Samara
– Process leading up to the Safer-Braver Spaces in Schools workshop
– Scenarios that are unproductive between students and teachers
– Process continued
– How the students prepared for the presentation to teachers
– How they felt when the workshop went live
– Impactful moments in the workshop
– Where people who attended came from
– Resistance BYE has faced and how they dealt with it
– How the youth felt after finishing the workshop
– What’s next for BYE
– The youth leaders views and opinions of teachers
