The Black Healthcare Professionals Network (BHPN) is a healthcare organization dedicated to advancing the careers of Black Canadian healthcare professionals. Its comprehensive range of services includes networking, career development, and advocacy to enhance diversity and inclusion within the healthcare sector. BHPN also supports aspiring Black healthcare entrepreneurs through tailored business advisory services, strategic networking, and mentorship, contributing to economic growth in the Black community and fostering innovation in healthcare. BHPN is committed to reshaping the Canadian healthcare landscape, fostering greater inclusivity and equity to address the evolving needs of all communities.
On September 7, 2023, BHPN launched the first Black Health Professionals Directory in Ontario.
In addition to the launch of the directory, they are also hosting a panel discussion on September 16, 2023, in Toronto, where experts from diverse health disciplines will discuss entrepreneurship and building businesses with purpose in the Canadian healthcare system.
Black health professionals often have an interest in starting their own business in the medical sector. However, there are unique challenges that they face to getting the businesses up and running and expand. These challenges are not often addressed by the resources available to them. The role of BHPN is to provide free business advisory services, strategic networking and mentorship for them.
Recently, Dr. Nikolai Whyte and Abena Addo, Co-Founders of BHPN were live on our show talking about the first Black Health Professionals Directory in Ontario and the panel discussion on September 16, 2023, in Toronto.
During the conversation, Abena and Nikolai talked about:
– Abean and Nikolai share some of their background
– The start of BHPN and the work it took to get things going
– The moment that the organization got approved for funding
– The organization’s first big win
– Getting an advisory board and what makes a good advisory board
– What does BHPN do
– When it comes to healthcare, what are biggest challenges for Black healthcare professionals and Black Canadians
– The BHPN directory
– Their big launch event on Saturday, September 16, 2023 and what they want the attendees to leave with
– The next thing that the organization is working on after the September 16, 2023 event
Abena Addo, is a Co-Founder of BHPN, an engineer and a passionate entrepreneur. Her experience as an entrepreneur for 10 years combined with her passion for business, community and health and wellness, makes her a driving force behind BHPN’s initiatives.
Dr. Nikolai Whyte, MD is a Co-Founder of BHPN and a practicing family doctor specializing in aesthetic and bariatric medicine. Driven by his observations of a lack of Black doctors in Ontario and a need for healthcare professionals to understand business and entrepreneurship, he played a pivotal role in conceiving BHPN. As the Managing Director, Dr. Whyte oversees the organization’s operations and guides it towards achieving its goals of increasing the representation of Black healthcare providers and entrepreneurs.
