In March 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. “The purpose of this Council is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy,” said President Obama. Today, Dr. Warren Farrell is leading the charge of a new proposal, to create a Proposal For A White House Council On Men And Boys.
Glenn Barker, Dr. Marvin Thompson and Dr. Vibe will part of a roundtable discussion with Craig McClain live tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific.
The discussion topic was The Middle School Boy Problem?
Craig McClain grew up in a middle class midwestern family. He is the father of two children and is totally devoted to his 5 grandchildren.
At 45, he attended an intense men’s training that changed his life. This weekend training challenged him to examine his self-limiting belief systems he formed during his difficult teenage years. His ability to feel his emotions, his commitment to service, and his empathy for others exploded. He knew this training should be done for teenagers, not 45-year-old men. And he soon found he was the one that would make this happen.
He knew he wanted and needed that experience when he was a teenager. He knew he had found his life mission. He clearly saw the vision of a national program that provides just such an experience. He continues to hold that vision today.
Craig scaled back his successful photography business and started working on forming Boys to Men Mentoring Network. He and Joe Sigurdson put in countless hours and thousands of their own dollars to form a organization that could make this vision a reality. Their leadership, vision and integrity have been the driving force behind the success of BTM. Started in San Diego in 1996, Boys to Men has become a thriving international grass roots organization, with chapters in 30 cities on 4 continents.
San Diego now has Boys to Men programs in 21 schools.
Some of the discussion topics were:
– What drove Craig to mentoring young men
– Why there is a middle school boy program and how his program started
– What are young boys are not getting from their peers and elders
– Punishment vs. understanding when it comes to young men
