Sistas Calling is a powerful and transformative production created by Dr. Roz, the founder of Dr. Roz’s Healing Place (DRHP). DRHP is a not-for-profit charitable organization and centre dedicated to empowering and healing women who have experienced violence.
Sistas Calling addresses critical issues like violence and racism, aiming to inspire and educate through the true story of Rosa, a survivor.
Sistas Calling was conceptualized, written, directed, choreographed, and produced by Dr. Roz Roach. In 2021, there were 127,082 reported victims of familial violence,” states Dr. Roz Roach, founder and Executive Director of Dr. Roz’s Healing Place. “By putting on this show, I hope to encourage the public to help in the fight to stop the violence, and to empower them to start their own healing journeys.”
This moving production is considered to be the first of its kind in Canada – bringing awareness and education to the theatre, utilizing music, dance, and spoken word. The Sistas Calling production is based on the experiences of Rosa, a former resident of Dr. Roz’s Healing Place, A Centre for Abused Women and Children.
The creative and innovative play depicts the journey of this immigrant mother fleeing domestic violence with her young son, and with the support of advocates and her own self-determination, triumphed against all odds. This theatrical production brings Rosa’s life alive onstage as a catalyst to spark a deeply needed conversation. It is also a call for men to join the movement and generate ideas toward an end to violence and racism in the greater society.
