Gary Pieters is an educator, writer, media/subject expert, diversity change agent, equity leader, community volunteer and history scholar.
He has over 17 years of work experience in the education sector. Prior to his duties as a vice-principal in the Toronto District School Board, he served as a teacher in the Toronto District School Board (grades 4-8) from 1999-2004, and a math and pre-algebra teacher in the Palmdale School District in Los Angeles County from 1996-1999.
Gary has served the community through his involvement on several boards and advisory committees as president of the Urban Alliance on Race Relations, Board Member of Sojourn House and as a member of the Toronto Star Community Editorial Board. He is an also member of DiverseCity Voices, an initiative of the Maytree Foundation which aims to improve the diversity of voices in the media.
He attended the University of Toronto and earned his graduate and undergraduate degrees in African Studies, Political Science, Teacher Education and Computer Applications in Education. He also took the additional principal’s qualification courses part 1 and 2, which made him qualify to serve as a school administrator in the Ontario publicly funded education system.
Gary continues to make guest appearances as a subject matter expert in the print, broadcast, and online media, and has written numerous Opinion/Editorial Page Columns for various media including THIS Magazine, and the Toronto Star.
