Janet Campbell’s second illustrated children’s book Purpose Finds His Gift encourages parents to help children discover and nurture their talents early.
Inspired by her own son’s struggles, Campbell’s book is an enchanting story of one young boy’s journey to uncover his own gift. After a year of college, Campbell’s son felt lost and uncertain of his future—as many young people do. “As a parent I felt responsible for my son feeling lost. I wished I had encouraged him earlier on to look within himself to find his gift and ultimately his purpose,” remarks Campbell. “Now, I’m a grandmother, and being a grandparent I feel like I can have a second chance to be a parent. I came up with this story to encourage my grandson to think about his own personal value and skills. Realizing what a valuable resource and tool it was in explaining this concept to a young mind I decided to write it to help other parents share this important lesson.”
Purpose, the main character in the book, sets out on a journey to discover his gift and looks in all the wrong places. Seeing the talents of others he begs to borrow their gifts. He asks if “Only for a little while” to borrow the majesty of the tree, the voice from the ocean, and the brightness of the star. Ultimately Purpose learns that he should have been searching within himself to find his gift. Listening to his inner voice he discovers to be the best version of himself he has to follow his own talents, instead of borrowing them from others. “I think we are all lost like Purpose at some point in our lives,” says Campbell. “I started writing to preserve the stories my grandfather told me growing up in the Caribbean. Eventually I realized that I too am a storyteller. My clients at my hair salon were always begging me to tell them another story, and even as a child my elders would say my imagination was too wild. Like Purpose I always saw the talents of others first, but ultimately found my own talent within myself.”
Campbell published her first children’s book Kafiya Meets the Moon in 2012 receiving rave reviews. She wrote the story nearly 12 years prior to publishing it. “Like Purpose my journey to find myself wasn’t easy. I considered myself a storyteller, but never a writer. After my grandson was born I started considering the legacy I was going to leave behind and that is why I published my first children’s book. I will never consider writing my profession, but more of a method to share my talent and my stories.”
