While the United States continues to focus on unemployment, a deeper-rooted issue in African American communities across the country is underemployment – being forced into jobs that are low wage, that provide few (if any) benefits, and insufficient hours. This is a resounding problem facing many workers and families in Black America, and neither Republicans nor Democrats will be able to fix the jobs problems without real changes from our country’s largest employers, like Walmart.
Not only is Walmart is the largest employer in the country, but it’s the largest employer of African-Americans in the US. With the size and scope of the retailer’s business, Walmart does more than impact the 1.4 million workers they directly employ; the company sets a wider standard in the retail industry – and our economy. And it’s a double standard that lets company executives and the Walton Family gets richer and richer, while front-line workers at Walmart stores – and throughout the company’s supply chain – are struggling of an average wage of $8.81/hour, without access to affordable health care and with their hours being slashed.
Tonight live at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST, Rev. Eric Lee: President and CEO of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference-Los Angeles and James Washington: two-year Walmart Associate in Chicago will be discussing this issue.
