Black Canada Talking™ is a live online event that provides Black Canadians opportunity to give their takes and POVs on stories that are of importance to them.

Our guests on today’s show are Dr. Helen Ofosu and Kafui Sawyer.

On today’s show Dr. Ofosu and Ms. Sawyer will be talking about The challenges with Black mental health and how we can do better in our Canadian Society.

– The ongoing difficulty Black people in Canada have finding Black psychologists
– What this means for students, children/families, and individual Black adults
– The progress (Black Psychology Section, support from certain Ontario-based organizations) and setbacks they have faced (Ontario Psychological Association, Black-wash, upcoming convention)

Dr. Helen Ofosu has been practicing Industrial / Organizational Psychology in the public and private sectors for over 20 years. In addition to Career and Executive Coaching, her specialties include assessing and developing leadership skills and navigating the complex issues of workplace bullying, harassment, equity, diversity and inclusion.

In 2012, she founded I/O Advisory Services Inc., a practice where she offers Executive Coaching, HR Consulting, and some speaking and training.

She is pleased to be one of the founding officers of the Section on Black Psychology, Canadian Psychological Association and the current Chair.

Dr. Ofosu is an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at Carleton University in Ottawa. In 2023, her first book, How to Be Resilient in Your Career: Facing Up to Barriers at Work, was published by Routledge. Her book has been nominated for a 2024 Trillium Book Award! With past winners like Margaret Atwood and Michael Ondaatje, author of The English Patient, this nomination is a significant honor.

Kafui Sawyer is a Psychotherapist, Family Therapist, and Trauma Consultant for Health Canada. She is the Clinical Director for Joy Health and Research Centre, a mental health clinic in Ottawa, where she conducts psychotherapy and trains junior therapists. She is also the Founding Chair of the Black Psychology Section of the Canadian Psychological Association. She helps children, youth and families who have experienced traumatic experiences. She is a consulting clinician for the Children’s Aid Society in Ontario. For over 15 years, Kafui has worked with diverse children, youth and adults in schools, communities, and governmental organizations. She is an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion consultant for McGill University. She also assists government employees who have suffered due to experiences (such as racism) in their workplace and everyday life. Kafui is a Clinical Supervisor for Psychotherapists and Students in Clinical Training. She has worked effectively with Black, Indigenous and Racialized People and provided mental health services and clinical support to professionals across Canada and the Arctic Regions. She also specializes in treating clients who struggle with personality disorders, addictions, and complex mental health issues. She is a clinical trainer in Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Kafui is married with 3 teenage children and resides in Ontario.
