Frederick Lowe was raised in Tacoma, Washington and has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Washington in Seattle. He am married to Susan M. Miller, a licensed clinical social worker in private practice in Chicago. Frederick has two sons from previous marriages, Joel Patrick and Frederick.
Frederick founded The NorthStar News & Analysis after working as a reporter and a writer for three major daily newspapers and editor for three trade publications that report on the payments industry.
The NorthStar News & Analysis is published to present an authentic image of black men and their experiences and in so doing to create a resource for black men as well as a counterbalance and a challenge to mainstream media, where black men are ignored, distorted or demonized.
In 2012, the National Association of Black Journalists named Frederick Entrepreneur of the Year.
Before he launched NorthStar, Frederick was a police, general assignment and investigative reporter for the Chicago Tribune for six years, a general assignment reporter and a business writer for Philadelphia Daily News for nine years, and a business writer for the Chicago Sun-Times for eight years. He has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize.
In addition, Frederick was the editor of three trade publications. They were: Cardline, a daily online newspaper that covers the payments industry, ATM& Debit News, a weekly publication about the ATM and the debit-card industries, and ATMmarketplace.com., which also reports on the ATM industry.
He also founded the Chicago Educator, a weekly newspaper that reported on Chicago’s public schools. In addition, Frederick founded a corporate newspaper for Pepsi-Cola General Bottlers. He have contributed articles to The Chicago Reader, New City and Loyola Magazine, Loyola University’s quarterly alumni publication.
