The Ontario Black History Society Launches Black History Month with Annual Kick Off Brunch. The 2013 brunch also celebrates the Society’s 35th anniversary promoting African-Canadian culture in Ontario.

The Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) hosts its annual Kick Off Brunch on Sunday, January 27, 2013 to mark the start of Black History Month in Canada. This year’s event welcomes returning hosts, CBC’s Dwight Drummond and Anne-Marie Mediwake in addition to Senator Don Meredith, who will be the keynote speaker.

The afternoon of celebration features music by the Evolution of Jazz (EOJ)Ensemble, Dave McLaughlin and Dominique Grant, plus a spoken word performance by Anne-Marie Woods aka Amani. Individuals who have made a difference with their local and nationwide achievements will be honoured. This year also marks the 35th anniversary of the OBHS, inspiring the brunch’s theme, “Reflections”.

“The OBHS acknowledges the foundation set by our founders and our collective experience,” says OBHS President Rosemary Sadlier, looking back on the Society’s thirty-five year history.

The brunch will be the first of several opportunities this year to not only look back but also to look forward. Sadlier notes that 2013 is the beginning of the UN International Decade for People of African Descent, and reveals the future creation of a centre for African-Canadian history and heritage, providing youth ” a concrete way to learn about the contributions of the multicultural Black community.”
