In March 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. “The purpose of this Council is to ensure that American women and girls are treated fairly in all matters of public policy,” said President Obama. Today, Dr. Warren Farrell is leading the charge of a new proposal, to create a Proposal For A White House Council On Men And Boys.
Last Monday evening, Glenn Barker, Dr. Marvin Thompson and Dr. Vibe hosted a roundtable discussion with Sean Kullman.
The discussion topic was The Boy Crisis – What Courage Is Needed In Fathering Today?.
Sean Kullman is an educator, father, and husband. He has taught college, high school, and middle school Literature and Language Arts for move than 15 years. He understands the ways boys and girls and men and women learn and spent the better part of his career fostering learning. His most recent essays include “How to Educate Boys,” which appeared in the New York Times and “While Moms are Leaning In, I’m doing the dishes: Sheryl Sandberg’s Gender and Class,” which appeared in the New Agenda.
He has spent the last several years researching gender equality and post-secondary education and the boy crisis in our culture. Sean is part of a coalition sponsoring a White House Council on Boys and Men and the upcoming “Today’s Boy Crisis Meets Tomorrow’s President Conference” in Iowa on July 20th. He attended the Faith and Freedom Coalition Confernces in April of this year as part of a contingent that met with presidential candidates to discuss today’s boy crisis.
Several years ago, Sean and his wife agreed he would be the primary care-giver at home while she took a new position and became the family bread winner.
With two boys, Sean’s favorite pastime is America’s pastime, baseball. He has coached Little League baseball for 6 years.
Some of the topics that were discussed were:
– Why did Sean decide to be a stay at home Dad and how has it been
– The effect of being a stay at home dad on his manhood
– What are schools not doing with boys
– The fact that institutions are being asked to replace fathers
– What does a good male village look like? And how is it going to happen?
