Stephen Balkaran is currently an Instructor of Political Science at Quinnipiac University (2011-Pres) He has in the past had Professorial appointments at Central Connecticut State University, where he is an Instructor of African American Studies and Coordinator of the Civil Rights Project, which he initiated and developed. (2006-Pres). He has served in the past on the faculty of The University of Connecticut-Waterbury (2005-06), Post University (2003-04) and Capital Community College (1999-03). He has also served as research fellow at Yale’s University, The Human Rights Research Fund working under Black Panther, Civil Rights Activist and Yale Professor of African American Studies, Mrs. Kathleen Cleaver.
He has authored 2 books: ReTracing the Civil Rights Movement and The Continuing Significance of Race. An American Dilemma. His 3rd and forthcoming book is entitled; Broken Promises, Broken Dreams, Disparities and Disappointments: Civil Rights in the 21st Century (September 2015). He has also authored over 40 articles in Academic Journals, Magazines and OP EDs on American Foreign policy, Race Relations, and Public Policy. He has given over 75 conference presentations on his research and publications throughout the United States.
Before launching his academic career, Mr. Balkaran worked for the African National Congress (Nelson Mandela’s ruling party in South Africa) in partnership with the University of Connecticut. He was also a Research Associate for the United Nations in New York, and was a former aide to the CT Secretary of State.
Mr. Balkaran’s educational background spans from the Presentation College in Trinidad, The University of Connecticut, and Quinnipiac University School of Law. Mr. Balkaran currently resides in Hartford, CT. USA.
