Dr. Max Wachtel is the 9NEWS Psychologist for KUSA-TV in Denver, Colorado. He is a forensic psychologist in practice at The Colorado Center For Clinical Excellence, and he is the author of “The One Rule For Boys: How Empathy And Emotional Understanding Will Improve Just About Everything For Your Son.”
Through his thorough examination of the research and a great deal of reflective thought (which he explains in the book), Dr. Max has come to understand that, when boys are taught and encouraged to recognize and express their feelings, and to understand how other people feel—rather than being tough, unemotional, and clueless about the motivations of others—the world becomes a happier, healthier, and safer place.
Dr. Max discussed how teaching empathy skills to your boys prepares them for the complexities of modern life: school, friendships, bullying, careers, and relationships. He also talked about:
– Why is he so passionate about boys and empathy
– The changes with the perception society perception of boys and empathy
– How the education system is dealing with empathy and boys
– His thoughts on bullying
– What advice are mothers and fathers asking him in regards to empathy and boys
– How much was empathy part of his growing up
– When can parents start when it comes to teaching boys empathy
– Some of the negative effects when boys lack empathy
– His concerns about boys and empathy
– His call to action for government/education system, society, families, men when it comes to boys and empathy
