Milt Ottey was born in Jamaica and is a retired Canadian high jumper. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada when he was ten years old. He won the national championships twenty-three times between 1979 and 1988. Ottey spent several years coaching in various universities throughout the United States, including University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), Kent State University and University of New Mexico before moving back to Toronto.
A eight-time Canadian champion in the men’s high jump event, Ottey is now the development manager for the UK based kids core skills development program International Fun and Team Athletics (IFTA) in Canada. He is also the director of Over The Top High Performance Athletics (OT Fitness). Ottey is married, has three children and resides in Ajax, Ontario.
During this interview, Milt shares with us various parts of his life from having a great time growing up in Jamaica, his relationship with his father and mother who have always been there for him, adapting to Toronto after leaving to Jamaica at a young age, his many challenges overcoming the educational system which made him stronger, his long and wonderful career as a world class high jumper which provided many great opportunities and learning experiences including Milt sending a application for him to attend an all girls college in Florida, going to school at and graduating from the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), retiring from a great career track and field and starting a new life in the world of coaching and starting his own business.
