Nicole Brooks was born in Ottawa, Ontario. She went to school to study film and television and realized that there was a need to talk about Black Canadian life and her heritage. She has her Honors in Mass Communication and Film Studies from Carleton University.
Nicole started her professional career as a singer but now considers herself as a storyteller.
Nicole most recent film production is “A Linc In Time” which features the extraordinary life of The Honourable Lincoln MacCauley Alexander, Canada’s first Black Member of Parliament and first Black Lieutenant Governor. a true pioneer and one of the Canada’s living legends. “A Link In Time” is currently airing on Omni Television in southern Ontario. Nicole’s next documentary project is on the great African Canadian entertainer Salome Bey.
Nicole current project is the play “Obeah Opera”. She is the creator, writer and composer for “Obeah Opera”. Nicole also is one of the characters in the play.
During our conversation, Nicole shares some of her journey, on how “Obeah Opera” came into being, why do Black men need to see a play of all Black women, how has the entertainment industry changed for Blacks.
Nicole closes our conversation with her message for Black Canadians and her belief Blacks needs to take a political stand.
